Is An American Bulldog Right For You?

 

 

 

The American Bulldog is a very muscular, sturdy, and powerful dog.  Males are generally stockier and bigger boned than the females.  American Bulldogs have a large, muscular head with powerful jaws.

 

These dogs are extremely loyal, brave, and determined.  Hard headed is an understatement for this breed.  The American Bulldog requires firm, consistent training.  Any command given must be followed through.  American Bulldogs love children but can be reserved with strangers without proper socialization.  They should also be well socialized with other dogs and small animals such as cats.  In addition, this breed loves and needs to be around people to be truly happy.  Without enough daily mental and physical exercise, bulldogs tend to become high strung and harder to handle.  They will usually do okay in an apartment if given sufficient exercise.  Regardless of living accommodations, the bulldog should be taken on a long walk every day and should have at least an average sized yard.  This breed tends to be heat sensitive so caution needs to be exercised during warmer months.  American Bulldogs drool, slobber, and fart.  A LOT.

 

Size varies greatly from dog to dog.  Males will generally grow to a weight of 70 to 120 pounds and a height of 22 to 28 inches, while females will get between 60 and 100 pounds and a height between 20 and 26 inches.  Due to the American Bulldog's "pit bull appearance", some people view this breed very negatively, even if the dog has never done anything wrong.  It is because of this that training is extremely important and consideration should be made as far as keeping the dog on a leash outside of their yard.

 

The American Bulldog typically lives around 16 years.  They are a LIFETIME commitment.
